The 67-year-old leader’s joining the BJP is being seen as a significant boost to the party’s efforts to strengthen its ties with the Scheduled Tribes, the strong support base of the JMM.

The BJP has started expanding its base ahead of elections in Jharkhand. A day after former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), another former CM Madhu Koda and expelled JMM leader Lobin Hembrom switched sides. Madhu Koda’s wife Geeta Koda had left the Congress earlier this year and joined the BJP. Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren joined the BJP on Friday, two days after resigning from the JMM, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s current style of functioning and facing “bitter insults”.

The 67-year-old leader’s joining the BJP is being seen as a significant boost to the party’s efforts to strengthen its ties with the Scheduled Tribes, the strong support base of the JMM. The veteran politician, considered close to JMM chief Shibu Soren, looked emotional after being welcomed into the saffron party. However, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Friday claimed that the next government in the state will be formed under the leadership of Hemant Soren despite the “trickery” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

This statement of JMM came just hours after former Chief Minister Champai Soren joined BJP at a function in Ranchi. JMM central spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said in a press conference here, “Despite the trickery, BJP will not succeed in its mission. The next government in Jharkhand will be formed under the leadership of Hemant Soren.” Assembly elections are to be held in Jharkhand later this year. On Champai Soren joining BJP, Bhattacharya said that it is sad when a family member leaves.
