Junior Hockey: Indian men’s team beat Germany in shoot-out, women’s team played draw with Orange Rood

India concluded the junior hockey teams’ Europe tour with a shoot-out win over Germany while the women’s team played out a 2-2 draw with Orange Rood Club. The men’s team won 3-1 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time at Bredes Hockey Vereniging Push here on Wednesday.

Gurjot Singh, Dilraj Singh and Manmeet Singh scored in the shoot-out. Earlier in the regular time, Mukesh Toppo scored on the rebound of a penalty corner in the 33rd minute. The Indian junior men’s team was heading towards victory in the regular time but Germany equalised four minutes before the end of the match, which increased the excitement in the match and a shoot-out had to be resorted to for the result. This is the second victory of the junior men’s team in five matches of the tour.

The team defeated Belgium 4-2 (2-2) via penalties in their opening match in Antwerp on May 20. The team also suffered three defeats. The team had to face defeats against Belgium (2-3), Bredes Hockey Vereniging Pusch (4-5) and Germany (2-3). The women’s team registered two wins and two losses besides playing a draw against Orange Rood on Wednesday. Sanjana Horo (18th minute) gave India the lead against Orange Rood.

Orange Rood got two penalty corners but the Indian defense thwarted both attacks and the team was ahead 1-0 at half-time. Orange Rood scored twice on three penalty corners in the third quarter to take a 2-1 lead. However, India equalized the score in the last quarter when Anisha Sahu (58th minute) scored in the last moments. India had earlier defeated Bredes Hockey Vereniging Push (2-0) and Belgium 4-2 (2-2). It also suffered defeats against Belgium and Germany.
