Jailed Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha on Thursday moved the Delhi High Court seeking bail in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam. A Delhi court on Tuesday extended Kavita’s judicial custody till May 14. Special judge for CBI and ED cases Kaveri Baweja extended the custody of the Telangana MLC after he was produced in the court at the end of his remand period. During the proceedings, the Enforcement Directorate told the court that the investigation is at a critical stage and it is likely to file a charge sheet against Kavita within a week.

Earlier, a court on Monday had rejected the bail pleas filed by Kavita in the corruption and money laundering cases being investigated by the CBI and ED. Special judge for CBI and ED Kaveri Baweja, while rejecting the application, said that prima facie there appears to be sufficient material against the accused.

In view of the material on record and the seriousness of the allegations against the accused, this Court is not inclined to admit the applicant on bail at this stage…though he was not considered to be a flight risk. The judge said, given the conduct in respect of intimidating the witnesses and the apprehension that she, being an influential person, might try to influence other witnesses in the case, the accused does not deserve to be released on bail at this stage.
