The Karnataka Waqf Board has rejected the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, saying it is against the “interests of the community”. The board also adopted a resolution condemning the bill and submitted a copy to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Our institution is autonomous, and the proposed amendment act is against the interests of the community. The board said they will not give any information to the joint consultative committee formed by the central government. The delegation also requested the state government to pass a censure motion in the next session and send it to the central government. The proposed amendment aims to centralise the regulation of wakf boards across the country, allowing the appointment of a non-Muslim chief executive officer and at least two non-Muslim members in wakf boards by the state government.
Following the protests, the government referred the bill to a 31-member joint parliamentary committee. On August 26, the Telangana Wakf Board also rejected the proposed Wakf Amendment Bill and said it was a move targeting the Muslim community.
