The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing on Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea. The Supreme Court asked the CBI to file a counter affidavit within a week. The next hearing will be on September 5. Meanwhile, the CBI filed an affidavit on Kejriwal’s bail, while it has sought a week’s time in the case challenging the arrest by the investigating agency.
55-year-old Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on June 26 from Tihar Jail, where he was in judicial custody in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Earlier, a Delhi court had extended the judicial custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till August 27 in a corruption case registered by the CBI in connection with the alleged excise scam. On July 12, the Supreme Court had granted him interim bail in the money laundering case.
The excise policy was scrapped in 2022 after the Delhi Lieutenant Governor ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and corruption associated with the formulation and implementation of the excise policy. According to the CBI and ED, irregularities were committed while revising the excise policy and undue benefits were given to license holders.
