Students and others protested against his government over the controversial quota system in government jobs. Fakhrul said, “We appeal to you to hand him over to the Bangladesh government in a legal manner. The people of this country have given their verdict on his case. Let him face the trial.”
Bangladesh Nationalist Party general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday asked India to extradite ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial, accusing her of conspiring to sabotage the country’s revolution. Hasina, 76, resigned and fled to India on August 5 following massive protests by students and others against her government over a controversial quota system in government jobs. “Our call is for you to hand her over to the Bangladesh government in a legal manner. The people of this country have given their verdict on her case. Let her face trial,” Fakhrul said.
Speaking to reporters after paying floral tributes at the grave of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul said it seems India is not fulfilling its commitment to democracy by giving him shelter. “Staying there, he has launched various conspiracies to thwart the revolution that took place in Bangladesh,” he alleged. More than 230 people were killed in incidents of violence that erupted across the country after the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government, taking the death toll to over 600 since massive protests launched by students in mid-July.
Tax authorities in Bangladesh have decided to lift the freeze on bank accounts of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, which was imposed 17 years ago. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday directed banks to lift the freeze on BNP chairperson Zia’s accounts, the Daily Star newspaper reported. In August 2007, the NBR’s Central Intelligence Cell directed banks to freeze the BNP chairperson’s accounts. She has been elected Bangladesh’s prime minister twice since 1990.
The 15-year-old rule of the Bangladesh Awami League has ended. An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on August 8. Zia (79) was released from jail on August 5 after Hasina (76) left the country. Zia was Bangladesh’s prime minister from March 1991 to March 1996 and again from June 2001 to October 2006.
