Amid massive protests over the Kolkata rape and murder case, the Centre on Monday issued an order to increase security by 25% in all Central Government Medical Hospitals. Issuing the order, the Centre said that marshals will also be increased in hospitals as per the requirement. A committee will be formed under the chairmanship of DGHS which will take suggestions on the problems of doctors. Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra issued the order saying that the basic problems of doctors like rest rooms, CCTV facilities will be fixed and in case of violence, an order was issued to register an FIR within 6 hours.

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court will hear the matter on Tuesday. According to the cause list of August 20 uploaded on the apex court’s website, a bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud will hear the matter on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, supporters of arch-rival football clubs East Bengal and Mohun Bagan gathered near Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday evening and protested against the rape and murder of a female doctor. Braving the rain, more than a hundred supporters initially gathered outside the stadium even as the Durand Cup match between the country’s two premier football clubs was called off citing concerns over the law and order situation. Supporters of both the clubs were holding each other’s flags. They raised slogans demanding justice for the victim’s family. A large number of policemen were keeping an eye on the situation. The Calcutta High Court recently transferred the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Earlier in the day, the CBI questioned former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandeep Ghosh in connection with the investigation into the case.
