The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday said it will consult experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on the DNA and forensic reports related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College. The official said the report will also help the agency determine if Sanjay Roy was the only person suspected of committing the crime or there were others as well. The bureau is currently investigating the possibility that Roy was the only person accused of the crime, but according to officials, the involvement of others will not be ruled out until the AIIMS experts give their assessment.
The rape and murder of the junior doctor in the hospital’s seminar hall led to widespread protests. A doctor on rounds on the morning of 9 August found the doctor’s body with severe injury marks inside the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department. Kolkata Police arrested Roy on 10 August based on CCTV footage that showed him entering the seminar hall at 4.03 am on 9 August when the crime was committed. Based on the CCTV footage, Roy was extensively questioned and the police observed “recent injuries” on his left cheek, an abrasion between his left and ring finger on his left hand, and an abrasion on the back of his left thigh, among other things.
