The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted six weeks interim bail on medical grounds to Amit Katyal, a close aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, in a money laundering case linked to the land-for-job scam in the Indian Railways. Katyal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on November 11, 2023 under various provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, argued that after bariatric surgery, he needed further treatment and care which was not available in Tihar jail.

Allowing his interim bail, a vacation bench of Justice Dharmesh Sharma said Katyal’s dietary requirements are such that they cannot be provided in the jail premises and after bariatric surgery, he needs proper diet to maintain adequate physical, mental and sound health. The level of care, attention, minute-to-minute monitoring and emergency response that the applicant requires cannot be provided in the jail at present. There is no doubt that providing home-cooked food every day for a long period is risky, the court said.

The court is inclined to allow the application for interim bail on medical grounds for a period of six weeks from the date of release from jail. The court passed the order as it asked Katyal to furnish a personal bond with sureties in the amount of ₹2.5 lakh. The court further said that a chargesheet has been filed against the accused, who was earlier also released on interim bail for about 84 days, but no allegation of influencing the investigation was levelled against him.
