Madhya Pradesh: Fire breaks out in bus carrying EVMs and employees, no casualties

A bus carrying electronic voting machines (EVMs) and employees on election duty caught fire in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, damaging several EVMs. A senior official gave this information on Wednesday.

Betul District Magistrate Narendra Suryavanshi told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ over phone that there is no information about any casualty of any employee or bus driver in this incident. He said that the incident took place near Gola village of the district at around 11 pm on Tuesday night.

The District Magistrate said that the fire broke out due to spark in the bus. He said that EVMs of four polling stations were damaged due to the fire. He said that firefighters controlled the fire, but by then the entire bus was burnt to ashes.

Suryavanshi told that at the time of the incident, there were six parties engaged in election duty and the same number of EVMs in the bus. He said that four EVMs were damaged and two were safe. He said that out of the four EVMs that were damaged, one control unit or one ballot unit was destroyed.

When asked whether the incident would affect the counting of votes recorded in the EVMs, the District Magistrate said he would send his report on the issue to the Election Commission and the Commission would take a decision regarding re-polling at the affected booths. An election official said that a total of 72.65 percent voting was recorded in Betul Lok Sabha seat.
