Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that he is ready for any evidence from India in connection with the request for extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Anwar Ibrahim, however, stressed that Naik has not said anything controversial against India in Malaysia. As long as Zakir Naik does not create problems or pose a security threat, we will let the matter rest. But we are ready for any evidence provided by India to extradite him under the law. He said that if evidence is found, we will definitely take action.
The Malaysian PM said that Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had raised the issue of Zakir Naik’s extradition during the meeting. Zakir Naik, who was born in Mumbai, fled India in 2016 amid allegations of spreading hatred and money laundering. The Islamic preacher was granted permanent residency in Malaysia by the previous Mahathir Mohamad government, much to India’s disappointment.
Naik has been seen with Anwar Ibrahim many times. In such a situation, on this visit of Anwar Ibrahim, the demand for the return of Zakir Naik has started rising. Relations between India and Malaysia have been full of ups and downs. The relations between the two countries soured due to Zakir Naik. Now both the countries are trying to bring the relations back on track.
