Excited voters were seen standing in queues to exercise their franchise at polling booths during the first assembly elections being held in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of most of the provisions of Article 370. PDP candidate from Bijbehara assembly constituency Iltija Mufti said that I am happy that people are coming out and voting. I myself am visiting polling booths. Expressing happiness at participating in the assembly elections to elect their government, the voters also expressed hope that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir will be restored following the democratic process. Voting is underway in districts of Chenab Valley on Wednesday, which have over 7.14 lakh voters. The first phase of the assembly election will decide the fate of 64 candidates. Voting is also underway in four south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian. Voting began at 7 am amid tight security at all 1,328 polling stations set up in eight assembly constituencies of Chenab Valley. Parts of the region, including Doda and Kishtwar, have witnessed a surge in terror activities since June, in which six army personnel, including two officers, lost their lives and four militants were killed.
