MK Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi demanding exemption of Tamil Nadu from NEET

MK Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi demanding exemption of Tamil Nadu from NEET. After the Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday passed a resolution opposing the NEET exam, Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking exemption of Tamil Nadu from the exam and abolition of the system at the national level.

Stalin wrote in his letter, “I am writing this letter to once again reiterate our consistent demand to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET for admission to medical colleges and abolish this system at the national level. It has been our view that the selection process for professional courses should be based only on class 12th marks and not through a separate entrance examination, which is an unwanted additional stress on the students.”

Stalin expressed concern, “In this regard, we have unanimously passed a bill in our assembly to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and provide medical admissions based on Class 12 marks. It has been sent to the Government of India for the President’s assent, but the assent is still pending.” The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief further said that the irregularities during the recently held NEET exam have vindicated the Tamil Nadu government’s opposition to it. He said that many other states have also started expressing their views on the need to abolish the current selection process.

Stalin said considering these aspects, the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed the resolution on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Stalin draws conclusions We urge the Central Government to give its approval to the bill exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET and amend the National Medical Commission Act to waive this selection process at the national level. I am enclosing herewith a copy of the resolution of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and I hope for your early intervention in this regard.

According to the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, NEET harms the opportunities of students from rural areas to study medicine and makes school education useless, and takes away the right to allocate seats in medical colleges to students.

“NEET should be scrapped. Tamil Nadu should be given exemption. The central government should approve the bill passed by the assembly making Class 12 marks a mandatory qualification for pursuing medical studies,” Stalin said after the resolution was passed.

Apart from this, MK Stalin has also written to the chief ministers of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana and West Bengal, requesting them to consider passing a resolution in their respective state assemblies, urging the central government to abolish NEET.
