Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will now be known as Sri Vijaya Puram. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the renaming of Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram. Home Minister Amit Shah said in a post on Instagram that inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of freeing the country from colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram. Shah described the earlier name as a colonial legacy. Along with this, he said that Andaman and Nicobar Islands have played a vital role in our freedom struggle and Sri Vijaya Puram is a symbol of the victory achieved.
Amit Shah said that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a unique place in our freedom struggle and history. This island region once served as a naval base of the Chola Empire. But today it is set to become an important base for our strategic and development aspirations. Along with this, Shah said that this is also the place where our tricolor was hoisted for the first time by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ji and it is also the Cellular Jail in which Veer Savarkar ji and other freedom fighters fought for an independent nation.
Inspired by the vision of PM @narendramodi Ji, to free the nation from the colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as “Sri Vijaya Puram.”
