Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine on Friday after completing his two-day visit to Poland. He arrived in Ukraine on a historic visit to the war-torn country at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky. PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine after it gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The Prime Minister was greeted with slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ by the Indian diaspora after he arrived in Kyiv. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President Zelensky.
PM Modi concluded his two-day visit to Poland on Wednesday before leaving for Ukraine. PM Modi’s visit comes at a time when the West has criticised India’s close ties with Russia despite shadow sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. Before embarking on his two-nation visit, PM Modi referred to the conflict in Ukraine and said that as a “friend and partner” India hopes for an early return of peace and stability in the region.
He said that I look forward to the opportunity to build on earlier conversations with President Zelensky to strengthen bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on a peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister’s engagements in Kyiv will cover many aspects of bilateral relations, including political, trade, economic, investment, education, cultural, people-to-people exchanges, humanitarian assistance and others. PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine comes nearly six weeks after his high-profile visit to Moscow, during which he held extensive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the ongoing conflict.
