The bandh called in Badlapur, Thane, Maharashtra, over the sexual abuse of two girls in a school, has now been withdrawn. Opposition parties had called for a Maharashtra bandh on 24 August. However, it has now been withdrawn. After the High Court order, Sharad Pawar had appealed that tomorrow’s bandh should be called off while respecting the Constitution. Uddhav Thackeray had said that the bandh has been called so that the government becomes serious on the issue of women’s safety. However, the Bombay High Court asked the state government to take strict action against those calling for a bandh. The court said that no party has the right to call a bandh.

The Bombay High Court on Friday restrained any political party or individual from calling for a Maharashtra bandh. This means that the MVA and other political parties cannot call for any shutdown in Maharashtra on Saturday. Hearing a few petitions regarding the Maharashtra bandh on Friday, a Bombay HC bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay said that the court will restrain political parties from going ahead with their ‘Maharashtra Bandh’.

The court’s decision comes after the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday called for a “Maharashtra bandh” on August 24 to protest the alleged sexual assault on two young girls at a school in Badlapur in Thane district. Opposition parties, including the MVA, alleged that the girls’ parents were made to wait for 11 hours at the Badlapur police station before officials took note of their complaints.
