Nagpur: BJP’s dominance continues in RSS’s stronghold, ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ will have to work hard in assembly elections

Nagpur is a major Lok Sabha constituency of Maharashtra state. From where the current Union Minister and former National President of Bharatiya Janata Party Nitin Gadkari has been an MP for three consecutive times. Before him, Vilas Muttemwar of Congress has also won the elections for four consecutive times. It is also called the sub-capital of Maharashtra. It is named Nagpur after the Nag river flowing in this region. Nagpur is the 114th largest city in the world. This region was settled by the kings of the Gond dynasty. Apart from being the district headquarters, it is also the main city of Vidarbha. Nagpur is the main center of nationalist organizations like Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Vishwa Hindu Parishad. This city is famous for oranges. Many temples, historical buildings and lakes here are major tourist attractions.
All the assembly seats of Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency fall under Nagpur city. These include Nagpur South-West, Nagpur South, Nagpur East, Nagpur Central, Nagpur West and Nagpur North. In the 2019 elections, four of these six seats were won by the Bharatiya Janata Party and two by the Congress. The current MLA from Nagpur South West seat, which came into existence after the delimitation in 2008, is the biggest face of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Who has been winning this assembly constituency for three consecutive times.
Both BJP and Congress have a strong hold on Nagpur South Assembly seat which came into existence in 1978. Currently, BJP leader Mohan Mate is the MLA from this seat. Before him also, this seat was with BJP. Congress had registered continuous victory in Nagpur South from 2004 to 2014. Nagpur East Assembly seat which was in Congress’s possession for about 26 years is currently under BJP’s control. The party has been registering victory here for the last three times. Its leader Krishna Khopade is currently representing this assembly constituency.
Nagpur Central, which comes under Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency, is also an important assembly constituency. From where BJP’s strong leader Vikas Kumbhare has been reaching the assembly for three consecutive times. Before BJP’s victory in 2009, Congress has ruled here. Nagpur West Assembly constituency, known as number 56 in Maharashtra Assembly, has been the constituency of the current Deputy Chief Minister of the state Devendra Fadnavis. Where BJP has been winning continuously from 1990 to 2014, but currently Congress’s Vikas Thackeray is the MLA from here. The only reserved seat of this Lok Sabha constituency is Nagpur North. Which is reserved for Scheduled Caste category. From where Congress’s Nitin Raut has been MLA for a total of four times from 1999 to 2014 and then from 2019 till now. MLA Nitin Raut also got a chance to join the cabinet of former Uddhav Thackeray.
