Bihar Police on Thursday arrested 16 people accused of arson in Bihar’s Nawada after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an inquiry. The arrested persons include the main accused Nandu Paswan. The main accused is allegedly part of a land mafia in Bihar’s Nawada district. Bihar politics has heated up over the Nawada fire incident and opposition leaders are demanding immediate punishment to the accused and rehabilitation of the affected families. Even Nitish Kumar’s NDA partner Chirag Paswan of LJP (Ram Vilas) condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry.
Chirag Paswan wrote on Twitter that the news of about 80 houses of Mahadalit Tola being set on fire by goons and criminals in Nawada, Bihar is extremely shameful and reprehensible. Being a major ally of the NDA government, I demand from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar that such culprits should be arrested as soon as possible and given the harshest punishment and every possible provision should be made for financial help to the victims. Along with this, he also said that I also demand a judicial inquiry into the matter so that no one dares to commit such an incident in future. I and my party have deep condolences for the victim’s family, I will soon visit the spot and meet the family.
At the same time, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi said that what happened in Nawada was unfortunate. People of SC community lived on that land but land mafias had their eyes on their land, perhaps that is why ‘Harijans’ lived on 5-6 acres of land. This incident was planted. The accused had the support of some people from the backward community but about 150 families were living on that land. 35-40 houses have been burnt and people have been injured. The SP has said that 15 people have been arrested and a case has been registered under the Scheduled Caste Atrocities Act. I demanded that the victims be compensated as soon as possible. I have asked the collector to provide relief and necessary assistance to the displaced families.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday condemned the incident of setting houses on fire in Nawada district and directed the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) to personally visit the spot and monitor the investigation. Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) gave this information in Patna. According to sources, the Chief Minister has also directed the officials to arrest all the accused as soon as possible. The Chief Minister on Thursday clearly told the officials that those who try to take the law into their own hands should be caught and punished.
