In another unprecedented turn in Nepal, the two largest parties Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) have reached a midnight agreement to form a new coalition to oust Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. According to reports quoting leaders of both parties, ‘Prachanda’ has been ousted from power. This development has taken place just a month after Prachanda won the trust vote for the fourth time. The agreement was signed at midnight by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) President and former PM KP Sharma Oli. Oli will lead the government for one and a half years, after which he will transfer power to Deuba for the remaining 1.5 years until the next election. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has raised. Deuba, 78, and Oli, 72, met on Saturday to prepare the ground for a possible new political alliance between the two parties after Oli’s CPN-UML ended its ties with the Prachanda-led government barely four months after supporting it. The two leaders agreed to form a new government, amend the Constitution and work out a power-sharing formula. Additionally, eight CPN-UML ministers in the Nepal government are set to resign from their posts following the midnight change in the ruling coalition, CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula said.

Our ministers will submit their resignations to the Prime Minister today itself. Looking at the situation, the Prime Minister may also resign from his post soon. A new government is expected to be formed by evening. The midnight agreement to form a new ‘national consensus government’ in the politically fragile Himalayan nation was aimed at ousting Prachanda from power. Under the agreement, Oli will lead the new ‘national consensus government’ for one and a half years. A report by news agency ANI quoted a Nepali Congress leader as saying that Deuba will be the Prime Minister for the remaining term.
