Praggnanandhaa lost to Fabiano Caruana of the USA in the ninth round of the Norway Chess tournament while world number one Magnus Carlsen defeated Firouzja Alireza of France in Armageddon. Carlsen now has 16 points and has a 1.5 point lead over his nearest rival Hikaru Nakamura.

Indian Grand Master R Praggnanandhaa lost to Fabiano Caruana of the US in the ninth round of the Norway Chess Tournament, while world number one Magnus Carlsen defeated Firouzja Alireza of France in Armageddon (tiebreaker). Carlsen now has 16 points and has taken a 1.5 point lead over his nearest rival Hikaru Nakamura. Nakamura lost to world champion Ding Liren of China.

Despite losing the Armageddon to Caruana, Praggnanandhaa remains in third place with 13 points. He is one point ahead of fourth-placed Alireza. Caruana has 10.5 points and is in fifth place. Liren is in last place with six points. In the women’s category, India’s R Vaishali suffered another defeat at the hands of China’s Tingji Lei, due to which she slipped to fourth place. Another Indian player Koneru Humpy also lost to China’s Wenjun Xu.

Wenjun Xu is now on top with 16 points and has strengthened her claim for the title. Tingjie Lei and Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk are tied for second place with 1.5 points behind her. Vaishali is fourth with 11.5 points, while Humpy is fifth with nine points. Sweden’s experienced player Pia Kramling is in last place with 6.5 points. Vaishali was the only player to lose in the classical game. All the other games were draws, after which Armageddon was resorted to for the result.
