India is expected to sign a key agreement with Iran that will give it management control over a part of the vital Chabahar port for the next 10 years. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India looks forward to a long-term arrangement with Iran on Chabahar port management. Union Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal boarded a special Indian Air Force flight to Iran and is expected to witness the signing of the crucial Chabahar port agreement between the two countries, sources told news agency ANI. India is developing a part of the port at Chabahar on Iran’s southeastern coast along the Gulf of Oman as a means to transport goods to Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asian countries, bypassing its rival Pakistan.

Why is Chabahar Port important?

India has invested heavily in Chabahar port. It holds strategic and economic importance for Delhi. It allows India to bypass Pakistan’s ports in Karachi and Gwadar and reach landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. Apart from this, this port is also considered a response to China’s most talked about Belt and Road Initiative. It also opens a new door of economic opportunities for business communities to explore alternative transit routes through the sensitive and busy Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. However, this project was affected due to US sanctions on Iran. Will open a new trade route between South Asia and Central Asia through Iran. In terms of connectivity, Chabahar Port will prove to be very important between Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eurasian regions.
