Imran Khan’s party has accused the Election Commission of Pakistan of trying to replace the tribunals formed by the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court to settle election disputes in Punjab province. Election tribunals formed by the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) in Punjab were not allowed to function.

Islamabad: Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s party has accused the Election Commission of Pakistan of trying to replace tribunals formed by the chief justice of the Lahore High Court to settle electoral disputes in Punjab province. “Election tribunals formed by the chief justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) in Punjab were not allowed to function,” Barrister Salman Akram Raza, a leader of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said on Sunday.

However, election tribunals in other provinces are working as per the list provided by the respective chief justices.” Criticising the election commission at a press conference, Raza said the people of Pakistan cannot forget the February 8 general election which was badly rigged. Independent candidates supported by Khan’s PTI had won no less than 92 seats in the election, more than the Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N and Bilawal Bhutto’s PPP. The PML-N and PPP, along with four other smaller parties, formed a post-poll alliance and did not allow Khan’s party to form the government.
