Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will visit China next week

Islamabad/Beijing: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will leave for a five-day visit to China on Tuesday during which he will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the talks, a joint roadmap will be prepared for further strengthening bilateral ties. Both the countries want to enhance cooperation under the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zehra Baloch said in her weekly press briefing in Islamabad on Friday that Sharif will be in China from June 4 to 8 on the invitation of President Jinping.

The visit is aimed at enhancing cooperation under the CPEC project as both sides look forward to launching the second phase of the project. The CPEC project was launched a decade ago and several energy and infrastructure projects have already been completed. “During his visit to China, Prime Minister Sharif will hold talks with President Xi Jinping and draw up a blueprint for the development of China-Pakistan relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said in Beijing. This will be Sharif’s first visit to China after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party-led coalition government came to power in March. Mao told a press conference that during the visit, Sharif will hold in-depth discussions on China-Pakistan relations and issues of mutual interests with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other officials.

He said China and Pakistan are strategic partners and the friendship between the two countries has stood the test of time and the partnership remains strong and stable. Apart from Beijing, 72-year-old Sharif will also visit Guangdong and Shaanxi provinces. Mao said the two sides have also maintained good communication and coordination on international and regional affairs. Mao said, “China is ready to work together with Pakistan through this visit to make further progress in our strategic partnership.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sharif chaired a meeting in Islamabad on Friday regarding his upcoming visit to China. The meeting directed to prepare an action plan to encourage Chinese companies to set up industries in Pakistan. Sharif assured that Pakistan will provide all possible facilities to Chinese industrialists and investors.
