Seven Indian badminton players, including PV Sindhu, have officially qualified for the Paris Olympics in four categories based on their Olympic Games qualification ranking. Sindhu and top men’s singles players HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen had secured their place in the Olympics long ago.

Seven Indian badminton players, including former world champion PV Sindhu, have officially qualified for the Paris Olympics in four categories based on their Olympic Games qualification ranking. Sindhu and top men’s singles players HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen had sealed their Olympic berths long ago and the formalities were completed on Monday, the cut-off date set by the International Badminton Federation.

As per the eligibility rules, the top 16 badminton players in men’s and women’s singles, based on the Olympic Games Qualification Ranking on the cut-off date, qualify for the Olympics. Former world champion and Olympic silver and bronze medalist PV Sindhu finished 12th while in men’s singles, Prannoy and Lakshya were placed ninth and 13th respectively.

The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty finished third at the end of the Olympic qualification cycle and will go into the Olympics as one of the best medal hopes for the country in badminton. In women’s doubles, the Indian pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa qualified by finishing 13th at the end of the qualification round. The women’s doubles pair of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, however, missed out on qualifying.
