Asian Games and Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sreeshankar had qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning the silver medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships with an effort of 8.37m. The 25-year-old was scheduled to start his season with two consecutive Diamond League tournaments in Shanghai/Suzhou and Doha on April 27 and May 10 respectively but he suffered an injury during training on Tuesday, ending his Olympic dreams. While posting on social media, Sreeshankar wrote that, unfortunately, it seems like a nightmare but it is the reality, my dream of Paris Olympics has been shattered. He further wrote that, I suffered a knee injury during training on Tuesday. After further testing and consultation, it was decided that I would need to undergo surgery.”

Sreeshankar said, “Throughout my life, I have had the courage to face adversity, to accept situations that I cannot change. Working hard to get positive results in things where I can.” Last June, Sreeshankar became the third Indian to finish in the top three of the Diamond League competition by finishing third.

Although he was disappointed with his exit from the qualifying round of the World Championships in Budapest, he made a strong comeback by winning a silver medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Sreeshankar said, “Life writes strange scripts and sometimes it takes courage to accept it and move forward. This is what I will do.” He said, ”My comeback journey started the moment I got injured in my knee. This road is going to be long, difficult and will take a lot out of me.”

Sreeshankar, who considers basketball legend Kobe Bryant as his idol, said, “The good thing is that I have a lot to give.
