India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra failed to defend the gold medal. Now India is also hoping for a medal in the Paralympics, while Pakistan is hoping for a medal from its discus throw para athlete Haider Ali.
In the recently concluded Paris Olympics, India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra failed to defend the gold medal on 8 August. He had to settle for a silver medal in the javelin throw event, in his place Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal and gave Pakistan the only medal gold. At the same time, India is also hoping for a medal in the Paralympics, while Pakistan is hoping for a medal from its discus throw para athlete Haider Ali. However, Haider Ali is the only athlete from Pakistan who is participating in the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Haider Ali, a native of Gujranwala, will represent Pakistan in the F37 category of the discus throw event on September 6. Apart from the gold at the Tokyo Olympics, Haider won a silver medal in long jump at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. He then won a bronze medal in the same event at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. But he could not participate in the 2012 London Paralympics due to injury.
PSB (Pakistan Sports Board) Director General Yasir Pirzada has announced that Haider will once again represent Pakistan at this year’s Paralympics. Pirzada expressed confidence in his abilities to win a medal and said, “We are proud to send Haider Ali to the Paralympics once again. His exceptional talent and dedication make him a top contender for another medal.”
