According to the information received from the preliminary data of public sector petroleum companies, the consumption of petrol in the country has increased by 12.3 percent in the month of April, but despite the intensification of election campaign, the sales of diesel continued to decline. The total petrol sales of these petroleum companies has increased to 29.7 lakh tonnes in April.

New Delhi . Petrol consumption in the country increased by 12.3 percent in April but despite the intensification of election campaign, diesel sales continued to decline. This information has been obtained from preliminary data of public sector petroleum companies. The total petrol sales of these petroleum companies, which have about 90 percent share in the fuel market, increased to 29.7 lakh tonnes in April, whereas the consumption in the same period last year was 26.5 lakh tonnes.

However, the demand for diesel declined by 2.3 percent to 70 lakh tonnes in the last month, whereas the demand for this fuel had declined by 2.7 percent in March also. The continuous decline in demand for diesel is important because this fuel is consumed the most in the country. Especially during the election season, diesel-powered vehicles are used extensively for campaigning. Petrol sales have increased due to increase in use of private vehicles due to reduction in prices. Meanwhile, the trend of demand for diesel is also expected to reverse with the arrival of harvest season and hot summer season.

In mid-March, the prices of petrol and diesel were cut by Rs 2 per liter each. This was the first time in two years that there had been a change in prices. If seen on monthly basis, petrol sales declined by 5.3 percent in April as compared to 28.2 lakh tonnes in March. But in case of diesel, sales increased by 4.4 percent from 67 lakh tonnes in March. Diesel is the most consumed fuel in India, accounting for about 40 percent of all petroleum products consumed. The transport sector accounts for 70 percent of the total diesel sales in the country. It is the major fuel used in agricultural sectors including harvesters and tractors.
