New Delhi. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu said on Friday that the government is trying to increase the number of airports in the country to 350 by 2047 and promote tourism. Speaking at a program organized at Vigyan Bhawan here on World Tourism Day, Naidu said that his ministry is working on connecting more and more places which are inaccessible by means of transport and are close to unknown places.

Naidu spoke of the government’s vision to promote domestic connectivity and provide better facilities and warm hospitality at airports to welcome foreign tourists. He said that the reason for this is that airports are the ‘gateways of the country’. At the Tourism Ministry event, he said, “Today we have 157 airports. …But in the next 20-25 years when we see real ‘developed India’ in 2047, we want to increase the number of airports to 350.”

He congratulated the Tourism Ministry for the announcement by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat that one lakh foreign tourists will be exempted from visa fees in the coming period under the ‘Chalo India’ campaign. Naidu said, “India received 4.6 crore passengers in 2014, and after increasing the number of airports from 74 to 157, today we are seeing about seven crore people coming into the country. “More than 35 percent of these people are coming to India only for holidays and entertainment.” He praised the ‘Udaan’ scheme of the Narendra Modi government for bringing air travel closer to the common man.
