Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed the media, sharing details of the conversation and discussions between the two leaders. When asked by a foreign press representative about PM Modi hugging Russian President Vladimir Putin during his recent Moscow visit and subsequent objections to the gesture in Ukraine, Jaishankar said it is part of India’s culture.
He further said that when people meet each other in India, they hug each other and this is what PM Modi did with Putin as well as Ukrainian President Zelensky. Jaishankar said that whenever PM Modi meets heads of state, he hugs them, whether it is in their country or in India.
On sanctions against Russia, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said that generally in India we do not impose sanctions on any country. This is not a part of our political diplomatic history… We generally look at the sanctions of the United Nations. These are the sanctions that we respect.
