All arrangements, including heavy security, have been made for Modi’s 45-hour stay at the mid-sea memorial, named after the revered Hindu saint. BJP leaders had said Modi will meditate at the rock memorial built to pay tribute to Swami Vivekananda after concluding the Lok Sabha election campaign today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kanyakumari on Thursday for a 45-hour long meditation session at the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The PM arrived from nearby Thiruvananthapuram and offered prayers at the Bhagavathi Amman temple. He is later scheduled to reach the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and meditate for about two days. Before his departure on June 1, Modi is likely to visit the Tiruvalluvar statue next to the memorial. Both the memorial and the statue were built on small islets, which are isolated and mound-like rock formations in the sea.

All arrangements, including heavy security, have been made for Modi’s 45-hour stay at the mid-ocean monument, named after the revered Hindu saint. BJP leaders had said Modi will meditate at the rock memorial built to pay tribute to Swami Vivekananda after concluding the Lok Sabha election campaign today. The PM had carried out a similar exercise at the Kedarnath cave after the 2019 election campaign. Modi will meditate from Thursday evening to June 1 evening at the Dhyan Mandapam, the place where Vivekananda, a spiritual icon admired by Modi, received a divine vision about ‘Bharat Mata’.

Security has been beefed up ahead of Modi’s visit and 2000 police personnel will be deployed during his stay, even as the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy will keep a close watch. Modi’s decision to meditate at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial is significant. Named after the famous Indian philosopher, it is believed that Swami Vivekananda swam to this rocky island to meditate in 1892. His followers believe that it was after these three days of meditation that Vivekananda attained enlightenment. Kanyakumari is located at the southernmost tip of India, where the eastern and western coastlines of the country meet. It is the point where the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea meet.
