Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban completes nine years, promotes ease and dignity in people’s lives

On the 9th anniversary of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban, it is important to mention that 3 crore additional rural and urban houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana are a boost to ‘ease of living’ and dignity of crores of Indians. Earlier, in the last term, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended the scheme till December 2024 so that the construction of approved houses could be completed and the keys could be handed over to the beneficiaries. Out of the more than 4 crore houses built so far, more than one crore houses have been given to the urban poor. Now the construction of additional houses in rural and urban areas is going on. The decision reflects the commitment of the Central Government even in its third term towards meeting the housing needs of the nation, ensuring better quality of life for every citizen and providing proper housing to the underprivileged.

All the houses built under PMAY are provided with basic amenities like household toilet, LPG connection, electricity connection, active household tap connection etc. by combining other schemes of the Central Government and State Governments. It was said in the meeting of the Union Cabinet that these 3 crore additional houses will meet the housing needs arising out of the increase in the number of eligible families, for which the government will provide assistance to rural and urban families.

Housing Scheme is giving a huge strength to the poor as well as to women empowerment.

In the last nine years, about 70 percent of the houses given to beneficiaries in the country are in the name of women. Most of these women are those in whose name a property has been registered for the first time. People are not only feeling honored by getting a house under the Central Government’s Housing for All scheme, but it is also increasing their confidence.

The central government is also continuously increasing its budget for pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. In the current financial year, a provision of Rs 80 thousand 671 crore has been made in the budget of 2024-25 to build as many pucca houses as possible for the needy eligible beneficiaries. These houses are being given to such families who did not have their own pucca house. Light houses with modern technology are being built, in which about 16 lakh houses are being built.

This assistance is available under PM Awas Yojana Gramin

The procedure and amount of assistance provided by the Central Government under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is fixed. PMAY-G provides financial assistance of Rs. 1.20 lakh to beneficiaries in plain areas and Rs. 1.30 lakh in North Eastern and hilly states, difficult areas and Integrated Action Plan districts. An additional assistance of Rs. 12,000/- is given for construction of toilet in combination with Swachh Bharat Mission, Gramin, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, or any other dedicated source of funding. PMAY-G families are provided with water, LPG, and electricity connections along with other relevant schemes.

Attempts at salutation of schemes

For years, people in the old system yearned for even the basic necessities of life. The country is coming out of the thought that I was born in a slum and my next generation will also live in a hut. The current government has been trying to saturate schemes for the last 10 years, and the PM Housing Scheme is a major aspect of that. Rising above religion, caste, state, houses are being provided to all eligible beneficiaries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that when the poor worry less about the basic necessities of life, their self-confidence increases.

The government is also making arrangements for rented houses

The central government is also concerned about providing good houses at reasonable rent to those who do not have their own houses. The government has made a special scheme for providing houses on rent to urban migrants, labourers and other working people. For this, special complexes are also being built in many cities. The affordable rental housing complex (ARHC) has been started by the central government. Under one of its models, a total of 48,113 units are being built, including 18,112 units in Tamil Nadu. Under this scheme, affordable rental houses will be provided to migrants near their workplace.

In the first model of the scheme, 5648 existing government-funded houses in Chandigarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Jammu Kashmir have been converted into ARHCs for the urban poor and migrants. Also, the process of converting more than 7 thousand vacant houses into ARHCs is underway. The story of millions of families who have become owners of a permanent house through Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban is similar. Some were forced to live in huts and some in slums in the city. People are feeling confident after getting their own house. Their self-esteem has increased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has said on many occasions that the happiness of getting one’s own house is greater because a house is not made only with bricks and cement but it is connected with emotions and aspirations. The four walls of the house provide security to the people. This also brings confidence of a better tomorrow in a person’s life.
