A grand ‘Maha Michhil’ rally is scheduled to be held on Sunday afternoon from College Square in central Kolkata to the Esplanade, in which people from various sections of society will participate.
Kolkata: Several rallies and demonstrations will be held here on Sunday to protest the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital. Members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well as civil society organisations plan to take to the streets and hold protests in the city and across West Bengal during the day.
Trinamool Congress women members will protest at various blocks demanding amendment in the law to award death penalty to rapists. Meanwhile, BJP will continue its dharna at Esplanade which began on August 29. Union Minister and BJP state unit president Sukanta Majumdar had earlier said that the protesters want Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resign from her post over the doctor rape-murder case.
The West Bengal government has called a special session of the assembly on Monday, in which a bill providing for death penalty to the rapists will be introduced and passed. A grand ‘Maha Michhil’ rally is scheduled to be taken out from College Square in central Kolkata to Esplanade on Sunday afternoon, in which people from different sections of the society will participate. A protester said, “This is a non-political rally and it was planned on social media. Thousands of people are expected to attend it.
