Birth and education

PT Usha was born on 27 June 1964 in Payoli village located in Kozhikode district of Kerala. Due to the poor financial condition of the family, her life was spent in poverty and deprivation. Let us tell you that she started running while studying in school. When she was studying in the fourth class, her teacher asked her to participate in the district champion competition. In this competition, PT Usha defeated the district champion, who studied in her school.

After this victory, she started participating in district level competitions for her school. The Kerala government awarded PT Usha a scholarship in view of her performance in sports. Then she took admission in a special sports school in Kannur for further training in running along with studies.

PT Usha’s Career

The turning point in PT Usha’s career came when her coach O.M. Nambiar noticed her during the National School Games in 1976. After this, PT Usha got a chance to participate in international games. Her international career started in 1980. PT Usha made the country proud by winning four gold medals in the Pakistan Open National Meet.

PT Usha reaches Olympic final

After this, she participated in three Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980, Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988. But during this time she missed out on winning a medal. However, she reached the final of the Los Angeles Olympics, which was a huge achievement for the country. Because before PT Usha, no female athlete had reached the Olympic final. She also performed well in the Asian Games.


Let us tell you that at the age of just 20, PT Usha was awarded the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. Along with this, she was also awarded the World Trophy. She was nominated for ‘Sports Person of the Century’ and ‘Sports Woman of the Millennium’ by the Indian Olympic Association. India’s best female athlete PT Usha retired in the year 2000.
