The Congress hit out at the government after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Saturday issued a notification for the recruitment of 45 joint secretaries, directors and deputy secretaries through lateral entry, also referred to as appointment of specialists in government departments.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi once again raised the issue of ‘lateral entry’ and said it is an attack on Dalits, OBCs and Adivasis. In a post on X on Monday, Gandhi accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to snatch away reservation from ‘Bahujans’. In his post, Rahul said that lateral entry is an attack on Dalits, OBCs and Adivasis. He further wrote that the BJP’s distorted version of Ram Rajya wants to destroy the Constitution and snatch away reservation from Bahujans.

Earlier, the Congress hit out at the government after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Saturday issued a notification for the recruitment of 45 joint secretaries, directors and deputy secretaries through lateral entry, referred to as the appointment of specialists in government departments. Meanwhile, government sources said the concept of lateral entry was first introduced under the Congress-led UPA regime and was strongly supported by the second Administrative Reforms Commission set up by it in 2005.

The former Congress president on Sunday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “attacking the Constitution by recruiting public servants through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) instead of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).” The Centre has announced the appointment of 45 experts through lateral entry to key posts like joint secretary, director and deputy secretary in various central ministries. Usually, such posts are filled by officers from the All India Services – Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFoS) and other Group A services.
