Rahul Gandhi said after nomination from Rae Bareli, my mother handed over the family land to me with great trust.

Rahul Gandhi on Friday filed his nomination from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, which has been a Congress stronghold for a long time. Sources cite several reasons which came up during discussions within the Congress family on the future of Amethi and Rae Bareli. The main reason for Rahul being selected was the legacy or succession factor. It is believed that by announcing Rahul Gandhi’s candidature from Rae Bareli, Sonia Gandhi wants to send a message to the people that he will be her successor. Congress did not want to make it Rahul versus Smriti, because it feels that he is a bigger leader than Irani. Compared to Amethi, Rae Bareli is a safe seat for Rahul Gandhi.

After the nomination, Rahul Gandhi wrote in his X post that nomination from Rae Bareli was an emotional moment for me! My mother has handed over the family’s work to me with great trust and has given me the opportunity to serve it. Amethi and Rae Bareli are no different for me, both are my family and I am happy that Kishori Lal ji, who has been serving the constituency for 40 years, will represent the party from Amethi. He said that in the ongoing war of justice against injustice, I seek the love and blessings of my loved ones. I am confident that you all are standing with me in this fight to save the Constitution and democracy.

Priyanka Gandhi wrote that a few days ago her mother had said, “My family is incomplete in Delhi. It is completed by coming to Rae Bareli.” A family that encompasses several generations; Who stood with us like a rock in every ups and downs, happiness and sorrow, crisis and struggle for decades. It is a relationship of affection and trust. It is also a relationship of service and faith which has been unbroken for half a century. He said that the amount of love, intimacy and respect we have received from the people here is priceless. The biggest beauty of a family relationship is that you can never repay the debt of its love even if you want to. In this difficult time, when we are fighting to save the country’s democracy, constitution and people’s rights, our entire family stands firmly with us in this fight too. Today, in the presence of thousands of family members, elder brother Rahul ji filed his election nomination.

Gandhi family’s distance from Amethi

Amethi Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh has been considered one of the strongest forts of the Gandhi family, but this will be the first time in 25 years that no member of the Gandhi family will contest from this seat in the Lok Sabha elections. Amethi, which became a constituency in the year 1967, is considered a stronghold of the Gandhi family and members of the Gandhi family have represented this Lok Sabha seat for about 31 years. In the last general elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani was successful in breaking this fort of Congress and defeated Rahul Gandhi by more than 55 thousand votes. The Gandhi family suffered a setback in the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in 1998 when Satish Sharma, close to Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, had to face defeat at the hands of BJP’s Sanjay Singh. This was the first time that this seat had gone out of the hands of the Gandhi family. In 1999, Sonia Gandhi returned Amethi to Congress by defeating Singh by more than three lakh votes. Sonia contested the elections from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and Rahul Gandhi was given the Amethi seat. Rahul won this seat three times in a row in 2004, 2009 and 2014 but in 2019 he had to face defeat at the hands of Smriti Irani.

Raebareli seat in headlines

Rae Bareli constituency, which was in the news due to the nomination of Rahul Gandhi as the candidate, has once again become a topic of discussion. Rae Bareli seat is also called the ‘VVIP’ seat, from where Rahul’s grandfather Firoz Gandhi had won in the first two general elections. The strong foundation laid by Feroze Gandhi in Rae Bareli constituency was further strengthened by his wife and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who won this seat in the elections of 1967, 1971 and 1980. Indira Gandhi contested the elections from two seats in 1980, including Rae Bareli and Medak (Telangana) Lok Sabha seats, although she later decided to retain the Medak seat. After that, Arun Nehru kept the Congress flag flying in Rae Bareli in the 1980 by-elections and 1984 general elections. From Arun Nehru, considered close to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to Sheila Kaul, the Rae Bareli seat remained with the members of the Gandhi family and their close ones. Sheela Kaul, a relative of Indira Gandhi, represented Rae Bareli in Parliament in 1989 and 1991. Satish Sharma, another friend of the Gandhi family, represented the Rae Bareli constituency in 1999 and Sonia Gandhi entered politics thereafter. After the Emergency in 1977, Raj Narayan of the Janata Party defeated Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister at that time. Whereas in 1996 and 1998, Ashok Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the Congress candidates. Sonia Gandhi had chosen the Amethi seat in 1999 to enter electoral politics, but in 2004 she left the Amethi seat for Rahul. Sonia Gandhi won the Rae Bareli seat four times from 2004 to 2019, although her victory margin had started reducing.
