This has been admitted by the railways in several reports, including the recent investigation into the accident in Visakhapatnam, the statement said. The party said the loco pilots are demanding that they get a weekly rest of 46 hours. This means that a train driver returning home on Friday afternoon will return to duty before Sunday morning.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday met around 50 loco pilots of Indian Railways at New Delhi Railway Station. According to the party, during the interaction with him, the loco pilots mainly complained of inadequate rest, demanding 46 hours of weekly rest. A statement issued by the party said that working for long hours without adequate breaks leads to extreme stress and loss of concentration which is a major cause of accidents.

This has been admitted by the railways in several reports, including the recent investigation into the accident in Visakhapatnam, the statement said. The party said the loco pilots demand that they get 46 hours of weekly rest. This means that a train driver returning home on Friday afternoon will return to duty before Sunday morning. The Railway Act 1989 and other rules already have a provision for 30 + 16 hours of rest per week, which is not being implemented. Airplane pilots also generally get the same relaxation. They also demand that there should be one night’s rest after two consecutive nights of duty and trains should have basic facilities for drivers.

At the same time, Priyanka Gandhi wrote in an X post that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met the loco pilots from across the country at the New Delhi Railway Station today and listened to their problems. She wrote that the loco pilots who run trains in the Indian Railways work in very difficult conditions. Long distance trains, many hours of duty, no sleep, no rest, they work under stress and this also leads to accidents. More than 3 lakh posts are vacant in the railways. Thousands of loco pilot posts are also vacant. The BJP government is not making recruitments. The pilots fear that the Modi government is doing this deliberately with the aim of privatizing the railways. Rahul ji assured the loco pilots that he would raise their issue in Parliament as the leader of the opposition.
