RBI 2000 Note: More than a year has passed, what new information has RBI shared about the 2000 rupee note?

Information about the 2000 rupee note has once again been provided by the central bank Reserve Bank of India. RBI has given information about the notes which have been returned to the bank so far. Apart from this, it has also told about those notes which are still with the people. RBI said that as of May 19, 2023, 97.87 percent of the 2000 rupee banknotes in circulation have returned. The facility of depositing and/or exchanging 2000 rupee banknotes was available at all bank branches in the country till October 7, 2023.

The total value of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023. It declined to Rs 7,581 crore at the close of business on June 28, 2024. Thus, 97.87 per cent of Rs 2000 banknotes have returned to banks as on June 28, 2024, the central bank said in the statement. From October 9, 2023, RBI’s issue offices have also been accepting Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals and entities for credit in their bank accounts. In addition, members of the public are sending Rs 2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI for credit in their bank accounts.

The 19 RBI offices that deposit/exchange banknotes are located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Rs 2000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016 following the demonetisation of the then prevalent Rs 1000 and Rs 500 banknotes.
