Ahmedabad. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that a large number of refugees in the country were not given citizenship rights due to the politics of appeasement of previous governments led by the Congress and its allies. Addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad after giving citizenship certificates to 188 Hindu refugees in Gujarat, Shah said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is to give lakhs of refugees their rights and justice.

Shah also assured Muslims that there is no provision in CAA to take away anyone’s citizenship as it is about granting citizenship. He said that previous governments allowed crores of infiltrators to enter the country and made them citizens illegally. He said that they did not give citizenship to those who followed the law and applied for citizenship saying that there is no legal provision for it.

The Union minister said, “Due to the appeasement policy of the previous governments of the Congress and its allies, the people who came to the country for refuge did not get their rights and justice.” He said that at the time of partition in Bangladesh, there were 27 percent Hindus but today they are just nine percent because they were forced to convert.
