On August 20, the Sultanpur court in Uttar Pradesh ordered the arrest of Sanjay Singh in the 23-year-old case and asked the police to present him in the court on August 28.
The Allahabad High Court on Thursday reserved its order on the bail plea of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh, who is facing charges related to street protests in 2001. Justice K S Pawar reserved the order after hearing the case. Earlier on Wednesday, the High Court had said that Sanjay Singh need not surrender in Sultanpur court till the order on the bail plea. Singh and five others were convicted by the Sultanpur court on January 11, 2023 and their appeal was rejected by the sessions court on August 6 this year.

The court took strong exception to Sanjay Singh’s absence from the hearing in the two-decade-old case. On August 13, a non-bailable warrant was issued against Singh, SP leader Anoop Sanda and four others, the hearing of which was scheduled for Tuesday. But the accused did not appear in court.

On June 19, 2001, a demonstration was held against poor power supply under the leadership of former SP MLA Anoop Sanda near the overbridge near Sabzi Mandi area of the city. Former councilors Kamal Srivastava, Vijay Kumar, Santosh and Subhash Chaudhary along with Sanjay Singh participated in it. A case was registered against all of them at Kotwali Nagar police station. On January 11, 2023, Special Magistrate Yogesh Yadav convicted all six and sentenced them to three months’ imprisonment. On August 9, the six were ordered to appear in the MP/MLA court. When they failed to do so, Special Magistrate Shubham Verma issued a non-bailable warrant against all of them.
