New Delhi. Former Australian great batsman and captain Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the head coach of Punjab Kings. He will replace his compatriot Trevor Bayliss in this IPL team. Ponting has joined Punjab Kings after being a part of Delhi Capitals for seven years. An IPL source told PTI, “Ponting signed the contract yesterday and it is for four years. He will need that much time to prepare the team. Ponting will decide about the rest of the support staff.
Under Ponting’s guidance, Delhi Capitals performed impressively but could not win the IPL title. The team also reached the final in 2020 during this period. He has also coached Mumbai Indians before. Punjab’s team has also not won the IPL title since the inception of the league in 2008 and the four co-owners of the team will hope that Ponting will fill this gap.
Punjab reached the final in 2014 and has been criticised for frequent changes in the team. The team has failed to make it to the top five in the last seven seasons and finished ninth among 10 teams in the last season this year. Bayliss was the coach of the team in the last two seasons while now retired Shikhar Dhawan played the role of captain. Sanjay Bangar was the head of cricket development of the team while Charles Langeveldt and Sunil Joshi were playing the role of fast bowling and spin coach respectively.
