Saurav Ghosal retires from professional squash, but will continue playing for India

New Delhi. Saurav Ghoshal, one of India’s finest male squash players, on Monday announced his retirement from the professional circuit but will continue to represent India in the multi-sport event for some time. Ghosal, who has played 22 years in the professional circuit, has won three medals at the Commonwealth Games besides winning two gold medals in the team events of the Incheon and Hangzhou Asian Games.

She won the gold medal in the mixed doubles category at the 2022 World Doubles Championships in Glasgow. Ghoshal wrote on his Instagram, “I started my journey on ‘PSA World Tour’ 22 years ago. At that time I had never dreamed that I would play professional squash for so long. As I traveled around the world and played some big stages I thought it would never end.”

The 37-year-old player said, “But everything has an end. I am overwhelmed with emotions as I write this message. This game has been my passion, my livelihood and my identity for so many years. Therefore, it is with mixed feelings of pride and sadness that I announce my retirement from PSA.” Kolkata-born Ghosal is the only Indian player to break into the world top 10. He achieved a career-high ranking in April 2019 and managed to maintain it for six months. Ghoshal has won 10 PSA titles, reaching 18 finals since making his PSA debut in 2003.

He has won 281 of his 511 matches on the PSA Tour. Ghoshal also holds the record of winning 13 national titles. He won the last title in 2020. However, Ghosal’s game is not completely over yet and he will continue to represent the Indian team. “I hope I’m not saying goodbye to competitive squash completely,” he said. I would like to play for India for some more time. Hopefully, I still have some ability to fight and can achieve something more for my country. Until then, thank you.
