Shreyas Iyer, who was out of Team India, scored a first class century after three years in the second round match of Ranji Trophy between Mumbai and Maharashtra on Saturday, October 19. Iyer, who came to bat at number five for Mumbai after the dismissal of captain Ajinkya Rahane, along with young opener batsman Ayush Mhatre took Mumbai ahead of Maharashtra’s first innings score. Both of them made a strong partnership of 200 runs on the second day and took Mumbai beyond 300 runs.

Mhatre was out after scoring 176 runs, while Iyer completed his century in 131 balls with the help of 9 fours and three sixes. This century has ended the long-running drought for Iyer. Iyer has been out of India’s Test set-up since the second match of the Test series at home against England in early 2024. The 29-year-old Iyer’s previous first-class century came against New Zealand in Kanpur in November 2021. Iyer also completed 6000 first class runs during the innings against Maharashtra.

Iyer’s performance has been poor since the start of the 2024-25 domestic cricket season. In the Duleep Trophy, Iyer scored only 154 runs in 6 innings with two half-centuries and as many zeroes. In the Irani Cup match for Mumbai, Iyer scored 57 and 8 runs in two innings. Iyer scored another duck in the first round of Ranji Trophy in Baroda last week. Iyer and Ishan Kishan were left out of the BCCI unbundling in early 2024 when they were ruled out of domestic matches.
