South African fans also praised their team along with India

Johannesburg: South Africa missed out on the T20 World Cup title by a narrow margin but their fans congratulated the team for reaching a World Cup final for the first time and also applauded the champion Indian team. “We have waited a very long time for the Proteas to reach the final and we were all really hoping they would bring home the title,” said Vimala Frank, former sports presenter on Lotus FM, South Africa’s only national Indian radio station.

He said, “But that did not happen does not mean that we are not a part of this campaign. What these players have done for South African cricket by reaching the final means a lot. We are proud of them.” He said, “I am of Indian origin but I am a complete supporter of South Africa. I am happy with the success of the Indian team.” Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive officer Foletsi Moseki echoed Frank’s sentiments.

Moseki said, “The whole of South Africa stands with this team. Reaching the final of the T20 World Cup is a tremendous achievement in itself and should be celebrated.” Bongani Butheleli, who arrived with friends to watch the match on a big screen at the historic Wanderers Stadium here, said, “It was more fun to watch this excitement on the big screen with a big crowd rather than on TV at home. As the match progressed, the enthusiasm of the supporters was also increasing. Congratulations to India but I think our team also played well.” Another fan Musa Mohammed said, “Our boys should be congratulated for reaching the final for the first time and we were preparing to celebrate but the match slipped out of our hands in the last moments.
