Commonwealth Games mixed doubles champion Sreeja Akula on Tuesday reached a career-best 38th position in the latest ITTF rankings and overtook Manika Batra to become the top-ranked Indian women’s table tennis player. In the latest rankings, Sreeja gained one place while India’s number one table tennis player Manika slipped two places to 39th position. 25 year old Sreeja has performed impressively this year.

They won titles at the WTT Feeder Corpus Christi and WTT Feeder Beirut tournaments in January and March respectively. She also reached the quarterfinals of WTT Star Contender in Goa. Sreeja had won the mixed doubles gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games along with experienced Achanta Sharath Kamal. Yashaswini Ghorpade and Archana Kamat remained at 99th and 100th positions respectively. Sharath is the top-ranked Indian player in the rankings at 37th position. G Sathiyan and Manav Thakar have replaced each other at 60th and 61st positions respectively.

National champion Harmeet Desai, the top-ranked Indian player a few months ago, has slipped further to 64th in the latest list. India has already qualified for the team events of the Paris Olympics. The Table Tennis Federation of India will decide on the entries of two singles players in men’s and women’s singles on the basis of world ranking at that time by May 16.
