According to the report of ‘News First’, United National Party Vice President Ruwan Wijewardene has confirmed that the presidential election will definitely take place and 75-year-old Wickremesinghe will contest as an independent candidate.

Colombo. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe will contest the presidential election as an independent candidate, an aide of Wickremesinghe said on Sunday. United National Party vice-president Ruwan Wijewardene has confirmed that the presidential election will definitely take place and 75-year-old Wickremesinghe will contest as an independent candidate, News First reported. The news portal quoted him as saying, “Only one leader has the knowledge to solve Sri Lanka’s economic crisis and that is Ranil Wickremesinghe. He has proved it with his actions.”

Election Commission Chairman R M A L Ratnayake said on Sunday that the Election Commission will be legally empowered to announce the date of the election after July 17. Ratnayake said the commission will announce the date of the next presidential election before the end of this month. The Election Commission had said in May that the presidential election would be held between September 17 and October 16. Ratnayake said the commission is currently in the process of finalising the 2024 voter list that will be the basis for the election. Officials said that according to the revised list, more than 1.7 crore people will be eligible to vote in the election.
