Tejashwi Yadav claims collapse of another bridge in Bihar, official gives different statement

Motihari/Patna. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday claimed that another bridge has collapsed in Bihar, though the concerned official said it was a temporary structure that was washed away in heavy rains. Yadav, leader of opposition in the Bihar assembly, shared a video on social media platform X and wrote, “Another bridge collapsed in East Champaran, Bihar today. Has the government fallen that it will make news? This is the 13th corrupt bridge to collapse in the last 19 days. There are countless cases of collapse and collapse of culverts, roads and dams.” In the video clip, locals can be heard blaming the use of du daan ka maal (fake material) for the incident that took place in a village under Madhuban block.

East Champaran District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal said he was aware of the incident and stressed that it was not a bridge, nor a culvert. “A sewage line passes through Lohargawan village. A portion of it was open. According to the information we have, a few years ago it was decided at the panchayat level to build a structure over the drain so that people could cross it without any hassle. The drain was covered with a temporary structure, which was not more than a few feet long. In case of such irregular works, too much soil was used and hence it was washed away due to heavy rains. Nevertheless, we are investigating the matter and will do whatever is required at our level,” the district magistrate told PTI over the phone.

It is noteworthy that in the last few weeks, at least 15 engineers have been suspended by the authorities due to the collapse of more than a dozen bridges in several districts of Bihar. The bridges that collapsed in Bihar include one under-construction bridge in Ghodasahan block area of East Champaran district on June 23 and one under-construction bridge in Madhubani district on June 26 and a newly constructed bridge on Bakra river in Pararia village of Araria district on June 18. Although there have been no casualties in such accidents, these incidents have also given rise to political debate, in which Yadav has targeted the Nitish Kumar government. But, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has blamed the RJD for this, saying that the rural works department was with the said party before the NDA government was formed in Bihar.

Meanwhile, in a press statement issued by RJD, it was said that Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has said, the collapse of another bridge in Bihar today and the total of 13 bridges getting washed away in the last 19 days is a direct example of the institutional corruption spread in the Nitish government. He said, we challenge Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to tell the people of Bihar when and who approved the collapse of bridges, when and during whose tenure the tender for the collapse was made, when and who laid the foundation stone for the collapse of bridges, when and who inaugurated the collapse of bridges, how much of the hard-earned money of the people got wasted due to the collapse of 13 bridges in just 19 days? Yadav said, if the Chief Minister does not make these figures public, then it is clear that the leaders of the NDA, which has been in power in Bihar for 18 years, are the supporters, protectors, sponsors and partners of this corrupt system from top to bottom.
