The goal of making Indian chips is very ambitious, confident of achieving it: Ola founder

New Delhi. Calling it a ‘unique irony’ that no Indian chip has been made so far, Bhavish Aggarwal, founder of cab service provider Ola, has said that his announcement of making the first AI chip for India is a very ambitious goal but the company is confident of fulfilling its promise. Talking to PTI-Editors here, Aggarwal said that making a chip is a ‘risky endeavor’. Despite this, he is confident that Ola Group and its AI unit ‘Sarthrit’ can achieve this ambitious goal.
Aggarwal said the company will not set up a manufacturing unit for its AI chip. Instead, the company plans to work with global companies active in Taiwan, Korea or the US ecosystem. The Ola top official said that talks are going on about this, but it has not been finalized yet. He said, “Hopefully someone will set up a state-of-the-art chip plant in India, and we will be happy to use it.”
Aggarwal said, “The design of every chip in the world goes through India. A little bit of design of every chip is happening in India, but we do not have any Indian chip. We have the highest number of silicon chip designers in the world, but there is no Indian chip. This is a unique irony.” He said, “That is why we have decided to make our own chip, and it will be an artificial intelligence (AI) chip. Along with this, a general purpose CPU will also be developed.” Ola’s dedicated unit for AI has been named Artificial. It has announced strategic partnerships with global companies like Arm and Untether AI for CPU and AI chip development.
