The government is preparing to give exemption in GST, foreign airlines and foreign shipping lines may get benefit

The central government is considering giving exemption in GST to Infosys, foreign shipping lines and foreign airlines. The central government can consider this in the coming days and take a decision related to it. This information has been given in media reports.

If a CNBC-TV18 report is to be believed, the central government is considering making changes to the June circular in the GST Council meeting to be held on September 9. The report claims that the Centre feels that the services sector needs clarity in GST and ease of doing business. It states that the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) recently sent notices to India’s second-largest IT company as well as several foreign airlines.

Earlier, it was reported that DGGI had issued show cause notices to 10 foreign airlines including British Airways, Lufthansa and Emirates for not paying taxes of Rs 10,000 crore. These notices were related to taxes not paid on services imported by Indian branches from their head offices.

According to news agency PTI, the 54th meeting of the GST Council is likely to consider issues of reducing tax slabs, rationalising rates, besides removing duty inversion under GST. After the June 23 meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that “In the next meeting of the GST Council, the Group of Ministers (GoM) on rate rationalisation, led by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sumant Choudhary, will make a presentation on the status of the work and aspects covered by the panel and the work pending before the panel.”
