The price of onion, tomato and potato may fall, the government gave a big statement

The Government of India says that there is hope of getting some relief in the prices of essential vegetables soon. Timely monsoon rains may provide relief in the prices of main crops like onion, tomato and potato. This information has come out in an official statement.

This will have an impact on the price of onion

Officials believe that despite a slight decline in onion production during the 2024 Rabi season compared to last year, the supply of the crop in the domestic markets remains at a comfortable level. According to information received from the Ministry of Agriculture, the targeted area under Kharif onion this year has increased by 27 percent to 361,000 hectares compared to a year ago, an official statement said. According to the statement, onion prices are stabilizing as the quantity of Rabi onion released by farmers to the market is increasing, mandi prices are rising and monsoon rains are beginning, which increases the possibility of storage due to high atmospheric moisture.

In the current Kharif season, farmers have targeted to increase the area under tomato cultivation to 272,000 hectares, as against 267,000 hectares last year. The crop condition remains good in major producing areas like Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh and Kolar, Karnataka. “Tomato harvesting has started in Kolar and it will hit the market in a few days,” it said. Officials said this improvement in yield will help improve crop prices. Moreover, the report found that major producing areas like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have seen an increase in the area under cultivation of this product.

In the case of potatoes, the statement said that a target has been set to increase the area under cultivation of Kharif potatoes by 12 percent compared to last year. To meet the demand, 27.32 million tonnes of potatoes have been kept in cold storage this year. Officials said that the prices of potatoes depend on the rate at which the crop comes out of cold storage during the period from March to December. It is worth noting that Kharif potatoes are harvested from September to November and this helps in increasing the local availability of the crop.
