There was no money to buy a hockey stick, now Lalit Upadhyay has managed to make it to the Paris Olympics team

Lalit Upadhyay, the shining star of Indian hockey hailing from Varanasi, has managed to secure a place in the team going to Paris. Lalit Upadhyay has become the face of hockey players for Purvanchal today. There were days in his childhood when Lalit did not have money to buy a hockey stick. Father Satish Upadhyay works in a private job and due to the poor condition of the family, he was often disappointed. Lalit has two brothers. Elder brother Amit Upadhyay also played hockey and seeing his elder brother, he made hockey his life’s goal. Today Lalit works as a Grade A officer in Indian Oil.

Lalit was born on 1 December 1993 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Lalit Upadhyay comes from the Varanasi Hockey School, which has produced legends like Mohammad Shahid in the past, who played a key role in India’s gold medal at the 1980 Olympics. Lalit Kumar made his debut for India in 2014 and has since featured in several international competitions for India. He was also a member of the bronze medal-winning Indian team at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, which India won after a gap of 41 years.

Speaking to a media outlet, Upadhyay said, “I was in class six and used to watch my elder brother playing hockey as he is also a hockey player. He quit playing due to injuries, but got a job by playing hockey. Since I was not much interested in studies, I also decided to make hockey my career.” Lalit Kumar Upadhyay participated in the Hong Kong Invitational Tournament in 2010. He then participated in the Muscat (Oman League) held in 2013 and then the Europe International Tour held in Holland. His professional journey reached the next level when he scored several goals for India in the Hockey Men’s Asia Cup held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2017 and his brilliant goal in the 22nd minute against Malaysia in the final ensured the gold medal for India. He was also adjudged the best player of the tournament in the Beighton Cup held in Kolkata in 2010.

Apart from his achievements in international competitions, Lalit also has a great record in the domestic circuit, which includes domestic hockey tournaments such as the Obaidullah Gold Cup and the Surjit Singh Hockey Tournament held in 2012. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay took inspiration from his elder brother Amit to develop an interest in hockey and his coach Parmanand Mishra also played a vital role in his development as a player.

He received the Arjuna Award in the year 2021 and was also a member of the Hockey Men’s Hockey World Cup team held in Bhubaneswar in 2018. Banaras has a great history with hockey. Vivek Singh, Mohammad Shahid and now Lalit Upadhyay. Everyone learned the skill of hockey in the grounds of UP College. Lalit Upadhyay started his practice from KD Singh. Lalit is from Bhagwanpur, a small village in Banaras. He has also participated in the Senior All India KD Singh Babu Competition on behalf of Lucknow SAI. Young players are seen saying about success that there is no shortcut to success, today everyone is praising the success of the player who has brought glory to the country with his hard work.
